When Your Brook Dries Up, Move to a Better Place
By Rick Warren
“After a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land.” (1 Kings 17:7 NLT)
When God led Elijah to the Kerith Ravine in the book of 1 Kings, he didn’t plan to leave him there for long. He was protecting Elijah while there was a bounty on his head and the assassins were out to get him. But God didn’t intend for Elijah to be born to live in a rut for the rest of his life, and God doesn’t intend for you to live in the rut you’re in for the rest of your life.
We get very complacent about the ruts and routines in our lives. The ravine that Elijah was in wasn’t that good. He was eating leftover food brought by ravens and drinking water out of a brook and living in a narrow space. But it was comfortable. He’d gotten comfortable and complacent with the rut he was in, when there was a whole world out there that God wanted him to see. As long as the brook was bubbling and the birds were bringing food, Elijah wasn’t going to move.
We don’t change when we see the light. We change when we feel the heat. And sometimes God dries up the brook in your life to move you to a new place.
Often what you think is bad — I lost my job! We didn’t get the house! The doctor had bad news! — could be the best thing that happens to you. How many times has something you thought was bad actually turned out for good in your life? The things you thought were going to destroy you actually develop you and build your character.
Sometimes God turns off the water supply because he wants you to focus on a new way and try new things.
In Enterprise, Ala., there was a group of farmers who grew cotton year after year. But for several years in a row, the boll weevil destroyed the cotton, and all of the farmers were going bankrupt.
So the farmers got together and decided they had to get another crop, and they started planting peanuts. The peanuts were so much more productive and profitable that it made all of those farmers incredibly wealthy. They built a statue in Enterprise, Ala. to the boll weevil, because if it hadn’t been for that little beetle destroying years of crops, they never would have switched to a more profitable crop.
God often dries up the brook in your life to move you to a better place.
Talk It Over
What is it that you’ve grown comfortable with in your life?
How have you seen God take away your comfort so that he can move you to a new place where you grew as a Christ follower?
Why is it easier to stay complacent where we are rather than move somewhere that we know God will provide?
